The Barthelasse district

La Barthelasse, the countryside at the gateway to the historic centre and Europe’s largest river island!

Situated between Avignon and Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, between the two arms of the Rhône – the large Rhône on the Villeneuve side and the small Rhône on the Avignon side – it offers 700 hectares of calm and greenery, just a few minutes from the historic centre.

The quiet, pleasant towpath offers a breathtaking view of the Pont d’Avignon, the Rocher des Doms and the Palais des Papes, making it ideal for a jog, a walk or a daydream on the grass.

And if you want to take a tour of the island, there’s nothing better than cycling – it’s flat and there are plenty of cycle paths!

You can buy local produce at La Reboule farm, visit the Manguin distillery, or simply stroll through the orchards.

Avignon, papal city

Avignon is a historic city in the south of France that attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world every year. This charming city is best known for its Palais des Papes, an imposing 14th-century monument housing a wealth of history and art. This palace is considered one of the largest Gothic palaces in Europe and is a symbol of the power of the Church in the Middle Ages.

As well as the Palais des Papes, Avignon is also famous for its historic bridge, the Pont d’Avignon. This bridge became famous thanks to the French children’s song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon” and is considered one of the city’s major tourist attractions. Strolls over the bridge offer breathtaking views of the city and the Rhône.

Avignon is also a lively place, with many restaurants, bars and cafés lining the cobbled streets of the old town. The city is also home to a large number of theatres and theatre festivals, including the famous Festival d’Avignon, which attracts artists from all over the world every summer.

To get to Avignon, you have several options:

On foot (red path on the map), pass by Ferme Reboule and reach the river shuttle in 12/15 minutes. Take the opportunity to buy local seasonal fruits and vegetables from the farm. Please note that this path is not available on Sundays as the farm is closed; you should take the road instead.

River shuttle schedule

By bicycle (green path on the map), follow the road and then the bike path. We provide bicycles for your use. Please ensure the bike is in good working condition before using it (brakes, lights, saddle height, lock, etc.).

By car (blue path), we recommend parking at the free Ile Piot parking lot 1km away and then taking the free shuttle to cross the bridge, or walking to enjoy the view of Avignon (5/10 minutes).
